OPINION — I agree the farmers’ market’s new location is pretty terrific. For the vendors and the buyers.
But I was there for the initiation of the Farmers’ Market in Old Town years ago. The whole point of which was to support Old Town! Park once, wander the market, then enjoy the cafes, boutiques, Western offerings and vibe of our historic downtown. All lost at the new location.
I give walking tours downtown almost daily during Farmers’ Market season. The businesses need this added activity. Both for our wonderful out-of-town visitors and our residents experiencing our historic downtown.
Other council candidates are touting the new location as a win-win. Raoul Zubia was at the first Farmers’ Market. He understands the intrinsic value of that Mission Church/Brown Avenue/Main Street added activities. The market will always be a win. The new location is a terrible loss. And every parking study said we didn’t need more parking there.
It’s sad that any Scottsdale elected official would fail to appreciate the economic and visitor impact of the Mission site. I’m voting for Raoul Zubia only.
