OPINION — As a 14-year-old Basis Scottsdale freshman, I cannot yet vote. However, the Scottsdale City Council race deeply impacts my town and the future of the only place I can remember calling home.
I am an LD3 resident, canvassing door to door in support of Mr. Raoul Zubia. Before I could knock on doors for him, I needed to know where he stood on the issues.
Mr. Zubia is looking to keep Scottsdale sustainable for generations (including mine) to come. His focus on our water future is essential to maintaining our wonderful community. Conservation efforts and drought protection are vital to keep Scottsdale safe from water shortages. He wants to protect neighborhoods by working for heat relief. He wants to make our long, hot summers more comfortable by providing shade structures and increasing tree cover.
As a teenager, I have been taught to respect my elders and peers. I have seen far too many politicians lose that common respect for one another. They resort to name calling and focus on controversial issues that only impact a small portion of our population. I want a leader who I can look up to, one who I am proud to have represent myself and my community at city council.
After understanding the issues, I was excited to support Mr. Zubia. Before I knocked on a single door, I had the honor of meeting him in person. He is kind, thoughtful and outgoing. He asked about my life, my goals and my family. He wanted to know where I lived and what was important to me. That is someone that I am proud to support. As I knocked on doors through the summer, I felt confident that I was representing the right person for the job – Mr. Raoul Zubia.
