OPINION — As a retired Maricopa County constable for the Arrowhead Justice Precinct, I am writing concerning the upcoming race for Constable in the Arrowhead Justice Precinct which covers Sun City, Glendale north of Bell Road and much of Peoria.
The incumbent withdrew from the race and there are currently two candidates running for this position as write-in candidates. Both are registered Republicans as there are no Democrats filing.
One is 22-year-old Hunter Blake, an EMT for the Ajo Fire Department to which he commutes. He claims a Sun City address. He has stated that he intends to keep his job with the fire department and do both jobs. This is not a part-time job.
The other candidate is Darren Emfinger, a 29-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department who has been a deputy constable for the past six years. Darren lives in Peoria and is a military veteran.
The constable is an integral part of our county Justice Courts as he/she serves the orders of the court to include orders of protection and evictions.
Darren Emfinger is a much more qualified candidate of the two. If you choose to vote for him, you must write his name in the blank for Arrowhead Constable and fill in the oval next to it.
Whichever one of the two receives the most write-in votes will be on the General Election ballot.
