Why experience matters in the Scottsdale school board election

Posted

OPINION — Experience matters when making decisions that shape the future of our schools. But not all experience is the same.

I'm a mother of six children, all educated in Scottsdale Unified School District. For nearly two decades, I've served as a parent, volunteer, advocate, and now elected governing board member. I know what makes our schools special and where we must improve.

Four years on the board have reinforced my belief that leadership means more than approving recommendations. It requires listening to families and employees, scrutinizing financial decisions, asking difficult questions, and standing firm when I believe another course is needed.

My record reflects that commitment.

I've advocated for less screen time, stronger academics, financial accountability, and parental involvement. I've supported teachers and staff while questioning district spending priorities. I've also voted against closing neighborhood schools because we should explore every reasonable alternative before making such lasting decisions.

Arizona families have more educational choices than ever. SUSD needs leaders who recognize this reality and are willing to innovate and compete for families rather than simply manage declining enrollment. Blaming school choice won't bring students back. Providing families with what they're looking for will.

I'm running for re-election because I believe in the future of Scottsdale Unified and its ability to thrive. That requires independent leadership willing to challenge the status quo, embrace new ideas, and find creative solutions that strengthen our schools.

My commitment extends beyond the boardroom. The relationships I’ve built throughout SUSD keep me connected to our community and accountable to the people I serve.

On Nov. 3, I'm asking for your vote for Jeanne Beasley and me to bring experienced leadership to the SUSD Governing Board. Learn more at SUSDstrong.com.
