OPINION — When I read the 9/23/26 front page article of the Sun City Independent regarding the proposed annual fee increase being considered by the RCSC board, I could no longer contain my anger.
In my opinion, the increase is not because the fee wasn’t raised between 2017 and 2021. It is because an eighth rec center was built to the tune of millions and millions of dollars! And all accomplished without any input from the majority of Sun City residents — all done by the board “in power” when that rec center was built.
Anyone can conclude — if visiting the Grand Center — that the board at that time must have had a majority of members who also belonged to a certain whose members are, no doubt, the most affluent residents of Sun City.
This is why we no longer vote for RCSC board members. If those running do not disclose what their ulterior motives are for being on the board, then how can a person determine who may be the best choice?
This is also probably why the Sun City Update, RCSC’s official monthly publication, no longer prints monthly financial statements nor major repairs or renovations to our facilities, as had been included in the past.
It is plain common sense that, after 40-plus years with seven rec centers (all transitioned to our community by Del Webb’s company), the utilities, insurance, manpower and maintenance for an additional center is a major reason for additional funds to be needed.
Though the time board members devote to our community is much-appreciated, they should not continue the myth as to the real reason why both the preservation and improvement and annual rec center fees have increased exponentially ever since the Grand Center property was purchased and that center built.
