Voting is a right and a responsibility

Surprise reader disappointed by low turnout in city, Maricopa County

Posted

OPINION — I am writing in response to Jason Stone’s front-page article in the Aug. 12, 2026, edition of the Surprise Independent titled: About 21% of eligible voters in Surprise cast a ballot.

It is disheartening that only some 21% of eligible voters exercised their right to vote, while Maricopa County’s turnout was barely better at just over 25%.

Voting is both a right and a civic responsibility, and those who choose not to participate are neglecting an important duty.

While I don’t have exact statistics on how many non-voters complain about the government, it is frustrating to see people complain without taking the time to cast a ballot. If you choose not to vote, you shouldn’t complain.
