Time for RCSC to modernize bylaws

Sun Citian: Unmarried couples pay more than single and married residents

Posted

OPINION — I moved to Sun City last year and quickly came to love this community. My home is in my name.

My girlfriend and I are not married, but we share our household and expenses just like any committed couple. The home we previously purchased together in New Jersey is in her name.

Because of the current Recreation Centers of Sun City rules, she must purchase a yearly privilege card, which costs us an additional $340 and still does not provide the same benefits as my member card.

It’s hard not to feel that this system treats her as a second‑class resident in the community we both live in and contribute to.

A recent opinion in the June 10 edition stated that couples pay the same as singles. That may be true for married couples, but it is not true for unmarried couples like us. We pay more than both married couples and single residents.

When I asked about this at the RCSC office, I was told the bylaws were written in 1960 and have never been updated.

Sun City has evolved since 1960. Our policies should, too. It’s time for the RCSC to modernize its bylaws so all committed couples are treated fairly, regardless of marital status.
