The sudden change in narrative on Fountain Hills’ museum

Posted

OPINION — More monkey business from the Fountain Hills ROT council majority.

Have you seen the "Save Our Museum" signs on our streets? Those were produced and paid for by Flourish Fountain Hills, which wants our museum to remain and flourish. Candidates it supports advocate for our museum.

Don’t be fooled when ROT-endorsed candidates stick their political signs next to the Save Our Museum roadway signs. These people are aligned with the ROT majority that was opposed to maintaining our quarter-of-a-century-old River of Time Museum and Exploration Center.

Now, the museum topic is surprisingly back as part of a special council session on Tuesday, June 30. Out of the blue, the game plan is to extend the lease. Talk about pulling a rabbit out of the hat!

Many of us can smell this "newfound interest" from a mile away. The same ROT-majority council that appeared ready to run our museum out is now feeling the backlash and looking to rewrite the narrative.

ROT-endorsed Allen Skillicorn, whom Gerry Friedel refused to hold accountable for his ethics violations and bullying, posted a video wanting you to thank Gerry Friedel as part of this gaslighting narrative. Imagine thanking an arsonist for starting a fire and then cheering them for putting it out. We know better. This temporary lease looks to be a political effort to earn points during an election while kicking the can down the road.

I recently visited our River of Time Museum. It is a gem within our community worth saving. That means electing those who understand its historical and educational significance versus those who would run it out of town. Councilmember McMahon supported our museum. Mayoral candidate Kalivianakis and Town Council candidates DeGennaro, Tate and Mirick support our museum. These candidates have my vote!
