Solutions available, but no action on leaf blowers in Paradise Valley

Posted

OPINION — Why does the town council refuse to do anything about the obnoxious leaf blowers that spew dust and add to our brown haze and gasoline fumes that destroy our lungs?

Two years ago, the town council met in its study session and did nothing. They use the excuse that we have limited government, though that technically means hiring third-party contractors for cheaper, instead of hiring more city staff.

It's funny how Paradise Valley residents espouse hands-off government, but they run to the Town Hall when a problem harms us.

At the candidates’ forum two months ago, candidates seemed to pride themselves in ignoring complaints and refusing to mandate protections to help us. They said the town would ask residents causing the problems to work it out voluntarily, which never happens with wealthy property owners.

We don't want limited government. Town Hall is the people, and we expect proactive government that finds the best solution, enacts it through ordinance so it has teeth and then enforces it vigorously.

The town council has received plenty of solutions but supports the residents who are causing the problems instead of protecting us neighbors who are harmed.

The town can outright ban them within 1,000 feet of residences, as Los Angeles and other cities do. The town can also mandate electric blowers, which are the same price and quieter.
