Results of the Fountain Hills mayoral election

Posted

OPINION — Let’s take a look at the hard data from the recent town elections. The numbers don’t lie. And we can certainly debate causes and conclusions. But this is my take.

Brenda Kalivianakis just received 3,877 votes when running stealthily as part of the Democratic slate. Four years ago, when Kalivianakis ran clearly as part of the Republican slate, she received 5,939 votes. That’s a loss of 2,062 votes, or 35%.

Kalivianakis made an issue this election of receiving the most votes last election. So, what happened?

Four years ago, few voters knew Kalivianakis. Voters paid attention the last four years and didn’t like her actions, especially pushing away from the slate that got her elected and being the deciding vote for the Target high-density development.

Gerry Friedel has done a great job as mayor. Works hard and is focused on doing what is best for Fountain Hills.

Kalivianakis and allies tried to create issues, but none of them resonated with the majority. The race broke down to political party lines.

I also believe Kalivianakis hurt the other Democratic candidates, especially Susan.

Republicans are committed to working harder in the 2028 local elections. I don’t have any advice for the local Democrats other than stop your flood of angry letters, social media posts and public comments at meetings.

Focus on getting involved and don’t worry about winning local elections with Democratic candidates.
