OPINION — I’m not sure how Chris Brant’s recent letter passed the paper’s civility or truth tests.
Chris says “left-wing demonstrations show predominantly white middle-aged individuals… no black people or men.” False, but what’s the point?
He further implies that protestors are “recruited” by sinister community organizers, have “limited or inaccurate knowledge of ICE’s goals”, and are “mirror images of the…tactics of Mao…who murdered 4-7 million people.” A despicable false comparison! We weren’t recruited but searched out protests because we know exactly what ICE’s goals are and abhor them.
Chris attacked and demeaned Sanders, AOC, Obama, Mamdani (and the Mayor of Seattle who he refers to as “being kept” by her parents?). He belittles people with his insinuating words — never facts — referring to community organizing as not a “real job;” belittling AOC’s waitress job; labeling Mamdani as a “part-time DJ” and Communist instead of a Democratic Socialist housing counselor, artist and campaign manager; while claiming no knowledge of Obama’s stellar record.
Chris’s conclusion is that “community organizers” are jealous of hardworking tradesmen/tradeswomen who’ve become successful without college degrees, so they favor Communism to level the playing field. What?
He claims “the American Way offers a unique roadmap to financial success and happiness.” Obviously, this roadmap isn’t working lately — probably the results of greed, unregulated capitalism, monopolies. When a trillionaire and multiple billionaires exist at the same time that a large percentage of people are struggling mightily to keep their heads above water, feed their families and avoid homelessness, then “Houston, we have a problem!”
Many factors determine a person’s success: physical and mental abilities, zip code, race, etc. Some people just need a hand up. Our country subsidizes wealthy corporations frequently but not struggling humans. Why? That would be socialism — now called Communism — and we can’t have that!
