OPINION — Respect? A letter writer says that the election results deserve respect. Of course, we respect the election results (we’re not election deniers), but the candidates have done nothing to earn respect yet.
This election was clearly a choice between respect, decency and civility or more of the same contemptuous partisan politics and cronyism. Disappointed that a majority of voters chose the latter in what is often described as a “friendly” town? You bet!
The letter refers to an old Facebook post, but oddly leaves out the multitude of unrelenting vile, hateful personal attacks on the candidates who were promoting civility. If you were not on social media, it was also clear just exactly who was civil and who was deplorable by looking at the proliferation of ugly signs that trashed up our town. Those candidates should not feel proud about the way they won, by letting the ROT PAC do their dirty work for them.
I’ve written before about Democrats being treated like second-class citizens in this town and that is why the promise of civility and collaboration was so appealing, and it was coming from a group that was comprised of a Republican, two Independents and a Democrat.
Respect is what many of this town’s residents were hoping for. Tune in to a council meeting to see the lack of respect, starting with the mayor. See how he treats some of the council members and town residents and how council members treat each other.
It’s such a shame to watch the town be denigrated by bullies who don’t respect differences in people or respect their opinions, and they don’t represent our population as a whole.
