RCSC’s proposed Articles of Incorporation changes raise concern

Sun City reader: Members have rights they may not miss until they need them

Posted

OPINION — Most Sun City residents may not be paying much attention to what the Recreation Centers of Sun City board is doing right now. As long as the recreation centers are open, the pools are operating and everything seems to be running normally, it is easy to assume that the details of governance don’t really matter.

But they do.

The board is attempting to amend RCSC’s Articles of Incorporation. The concern is not simply what they want to change, it’s how they’re attempting to do it.

The articles establish the rules under which this corporation is governed, including provisions concerning member approval and meetings. If those provisions can simply be bypassed when they become inconvenient, then the protections those articles provide to every member become little more than words on paper.

You may not care about your RCSC voting rights today. You may never attend a membership meeting. You may never question a decision made by the board.

But there may come a day when you need those rights.

Perhaps the board proposes something that directly affects you, your assessments, your recreation centers, your ability to vote or your ability to have a meaningful voice in how RCSC is governed. At that point, you may wish those protections had been respected and preserved.

This isn’t about personalities or politics. It is about whether the rules apply when those in power don’t like the rules.

Sun City residents should pay attention now, because once member rights are surrendered, getting them back may be far more difficult than protecting them in the first place.
