OPINION — The “unveiling” of the Recreation Centers of Sun City West comprehensive 10-year master plan is over, the “celebration” has ended.
What did we get for our $275,000 that we paid a consultant to do it? I’ll tell you: The emperor has no clothes is what we have.
A wish list of projects estimated to cost more money than this community has ever seen. Tens of millions of dollars’ worth. Why should current residents, contributing to this community for years and often decades, be asked to contribute still more so the next generation of retirees will consider moving here?
We’re told we must do this so our homes hold their value and possibly increase over time. The reality is the value of our homes is affected by a multitude of factors, some of which are within our control, like general maintenance and appearance, while some are not. Inflation, interest rates and demand for housing are just some of the others. These proposed bling projects are just a small part of the total package. No one really knows what the next five or 10 years will bring us.
Regarding potential projects, the list is crammed with requests so far out as to be highly questionable on their faces alone — forget outrageous, unsubstantiated cost guesses.
By the way, the estimates are just that: guesses. No one knows what concrete, lumber and steel will cost in five or 10 years any more than they know what the price of eggs will be. There isn’t any money set aside for rebuilding the Kuentz tennis courts, as claimed by the chair of Budget and Finance. She should resign for making such a misleading comment.
We live in a fabulous community. If we want to keep attracting people we must keep our facilities in excellent condition.
