OPINION — This administration thinks it’d be a good idea to livestream the firing squad death of another human being. Why? This is depraved and barbaric. What’s next, a coliseum with lions? No child should see such a spectacle.
We continually have our minds assaulted with misinformation and fear in order to convince us that anything we do to immigrants, even children, is justified because “they’ve broken the law” and are not human anyway. The recent immigrant who was shot while in his car with his 5-year-old son was accused of having “several driving infractions.” What? Is this a death penalty crime now? Seeing what went down, one would think the target was violent and dangerous. If he had been, the tactics used still wouldn’t have been acceptable in civilized society.
And, if we follow through with public executions, we’ll put ourselves in the same category as only Iran and Taliban-led Afghanistan. Even Saudi Arabia stopped using public executions. And it would be psychologically harmful to those watching (especially children) seeming to justify violence against “certain” people.
In an era when the Trump administration mistakes manliness, testosterone and unlawful brute force as courage and those with any compassion or non-violence as cowards, what do we expect?
Tragically, this machismo and practice of misinforming and falsely tarnishing any opposition has spread to others running for office. The number of signs posting misleading information about candidates or policies is astounding this year. “Democrats for Biggs,” “Socialist Amish Shah supports child mutilation,” and “Huge tax increases In Fountain Hills” are all dishonest signs placed there by various Republican groups to scare voters.
Taxes here will stay exactly the same if you vote “yes” on the override, continuing funding at the current rate. Voting “no” will strip the schools of much-needed funds. Vote!
