Kaleb Brown piece on stuttering right on target

Reader calls media, Hollywood portrayals of those who stutter ‘a travesty;’ offers resources

OPINION — I would like to offer some commentary on the great opinion piece, The Long Run: Glendale native dispels myths about stuttering, by Kaleb Brown. I have had issues with stuttering in my life and thought that Brown made great points that the media has consistently portrayed stuttering as a negative or undesirable way of speaking.

He is right on target in saying that people who stutter should embrace their stuttering as a natural way of speaking.

Stuttering does not discriminate. It affects every segment of the population equally. Your readership should be aware that there are resources available to the Spanish-speaking community.

The Stuttering Foundation has a Spanish-language website, La Fundación Americana de la Tartamudez that provides resources to both people who stutter and parents of children who stutter. Their regular English-language website is famous the world over for providing countless free resources. It also offers a helpful brochure, “Stuttering and the Bilingual Child.”

Kaleb Brown’s opinion piece gave an important voice to people who stutter. He underscored the point that stuttering is unrelated to intelligence and that it is just a travesty how the media and Hollywood has tried to link stuttering to a lack of intelligence.
