OPINION — When I attended the Fountain Hills Town Council candidates’ forum, I left with an unsurprising revelation. I am completely done with candidates who think they can get my vote by playing political theater.
When I want to be entertained, I switch on Netflix or go to the great little community theater here in town. So, when council candidate Jeff Tate started his remarks with, “I am not good at this, I’d much rather talk to people one-on-one,” that got my attention. And he’s right, big forums are not his strong suit. I took him at his word and talked to him one on-one.
I learned that Jeff is an intelligent fellow (bachelor’s degree in mathematics) and has serious skills (he started his own computer aided drafting business and his idea of fun is building things like amazing cat patios, which he calls catios). He served in local government before he moved here, so he brings experience with city government, school boards, long-range planning, etc.
What impressed me most of all is he gets that he is a public servant, whose job is to listen to what the Fountain Hills residents want, not waste time with political games or building his own political career.
