Feds should control federal elections, reader says

Sun City West resident responds to letter on Postal Service’s obligation to deliver mail-in ballots

OPINION — Response to Constitution requires postal service to deliver ballots: The Constitution states very little about the U.S. Post Office. The Postal Act of 1792 adds more to it, as well as Kohl vs. United States, 1875.

A big change was the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970. Another big change came in 2022, whereby Congress approved a $107 billion financial overhaul of the U.S. Postal Service to modernize and invest in efficient service. Yet in 2023, the Postal Service still lost $6.5 billion and $9.5 billion in 2024.

Should mail-in ballots be allowed? I believe there needs to be federal regulations governing federal elections. This pressure between state government and federal government is an old one going all the way back to our country’s beginning.

Can the president, by executive order, change that? I doubt it. I suspect it will ultimately be determined in the courts — that is, if Congress kicks the can down road, like it is doing with the Social Security Trust Fund.
