OPINION — Nearly 4,000 locals chose respect, decency and civility for Fountain Hills, but it appears that it was not enough, unfortunately.
We have seen misguided decisions before (with no need to point out the most obvious one), and experienced the frustration and anger not just personally, but often on behalf of others who were targeted, diminished and marginalized.
To the nearly 4,000 residents, while our voices fell short to the slightly more than 4,000 residents, do not despair. There is strength in a community of values, inclusion, decency, sensibility and fortitude...even if that community is a subset of a modestly larger whole.
To council candidates Susan DeGennaro, Catherine Mirick and Jeff Tate, and mayoral candidate Brenda Kalivianakis, you ran quality campaigns and stayed above the fray — often in the face of adversity and ugliness directed your way. You were — and are — the epitome of what so many of us hope to see Fountain Hills become again, in time. Thank you for investment of time and energy toward our community. I am confident that you will remain assets alongside fellow neighbors committed to respectability, resilience, decorum, integrity and inclusion.
