Don’t jump head-first into AI

Posted

OPINION — Welcome fall, the season for the colors orange, brown, yellow and red. It usually comes with great weather and the start of many brand-new activities.

October has arrived, and in the northern hemisphere, that means the beauty and excitement of falling leaves, chilly weather and our beloved holiday time. No one can ever make changes to that, even if – for some reason – they want to try.

However, on the other hand, there is one thing that could use a little redirection, and that is the people. Like with a big pile of raked leaves, many have jumped in head-first to the speed and wisdom of AI. Many see it as a way to do their work faster and better, and it really is. The “A” in artificial is growing by leaps and bounds while the “I” in real intelligence keeps getting smaller.

How did all this happen right in front of our eyes? No one knows, and yet it did. Hopefully, we will be able to stop it before that imbalance gets too large. Our children and families mean too much to us to have it any other way!

Do you know there is a real word, “ai?” Here is what the well-respected Merriam Webster Dictionary tells us about that. Literally, it means “sloth.” That is a slow-moving, somewhat lazy animal. From that beginning this same word, “ai” turned into having another meaning — a reluctance to work or make an effort; laziness.

The dictionary even lists some similar meanings like lethargy, slowness, dullness and a few more. All kidding aside, keep that great big leaf pile in mind. Don’t just jump in headfirst without carefully evaluating what it can and cannot do. As any wise teacher would tell you, “Be careful!” Happy Fall!
