Can’t we all come together as Americans?

Sun City West reader: Democrats, Republicans all want safety, peace, decency, honest government

OPINION — Paul Cahill’s recent letter in the Independent left me feeling sad. I think we want the same things, but I feel like we live in two different worlds.

We both agree we need truthful sources to watch on TV, honest journalists. I enjoy honest debates from both political parties, too. My problem is that he then mentions TV anchors who work for a network that had to pay millions of dollars after losing in court for broadcasting false information to the public. Anyone can Google it, look it up with help from the librarian in the resources section or go to any dot-gov site on the subject.

I am a Democrat who wants exactly what I hear Republicans say they want. Like Republicans, I want safety, peace, decency and an honest government.

My Democratic friends and family don’t want to get rid of the police, either. Several relatives of mine are police officers. The slogan that some protesters used, “defund the police,” meant the police need more funding for mental-health situations since many problems occur from mentally unwell situations.

Today’s Republican party fights for paying less corporate taxes and less corporate safety restrictions. Russia and China want the present administration to succeed to make “deals.” They love seeing our country weaker and  more vulnerable.

I believe that Americans need to remember all of the people who came here and built this country. Let’s try to do the American thing and get together again, respect our laws, depend on our police to capture rapists and murderers, and help fellow Americans who need a helping hand get a leg up to share in the bounty of this already great country!
