OPINION — About the selection of a lieutenant governor: What is the reason for cross-party candidates?
If this is the case, the lieutenant governor should run completely separate from the governor.
I still don't think we need a lieutenant governor. Nothing is duly assigned. There are no important tasks. The office is another waste of the taxpayers’ money.
The Arizona Constitution provides that the state Legislature may prescribe further duties for the lieutenant governor. The proposition, through a law pre-passed by the Legislature, will also task the governor with assigning a job to their running mate, such as chief of staff, the director of the state Department of Administration or "any position" to which the governor can appoint someone by law.
In the event the office of lieutenant governor becomes vacant, the governor appoints a new person to serve in the position subject to majority approval of both houses of the Legislature.
Get rid of the office for lieutenant governor.
