Another critical election for Scottsdale Unified School District

Posted

OPINION — Every election cycle we hear this is the most important school board election yet. While that message can lose its impact over time, this year's Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board election truly will shape the district's future.

The stakes are high. If voters don’t participate, the board could lose members willing to challenge Superintendent Dr. Scott Menzel's agenda and advocate for academic excellence, fiscal responsibility and parental involvement.

The current board includes three progressive members elected after campaigning in support of Dr. Menzel and promoting greater reliance on education professionals over parental input. Since then, many parents believe the district has moved further away from its traditional focus on student achievement.

This November, two board seats are on the ballot. Amy Carney is seeking reelection, while Carine Werner is stepping down to focus on her reelection campaign for the Arizona Senate.

The Scottsdale Education Association has endorsed Dr. Jennifer Johnson, a professional educator whose background raises questions about her independence. Johnson recently established residency within the district and has professional ties to both Dr. Menzel and SUSD leadership. As Assistant Vice President for Academic Alliances at Grand Canyon University, she directed the Superintendents Collaborative Network, which included Dr. Menzel as a mentor for new superintendents. She also serves on the board of Love Public Ed AZ alongside SUSD Assistant Superintendent Dr. Heather Cruz.

These connections suggest Dr. Johnson would likely support the current administration's priorities rather than provide independent oversight.

For voters seeking a different direction, Amy Carney has consistently advocated for academic achievement, responsible budgeting and accountability. Jeanie Beasley brings decades of community involvement, having lived in Scottsdale for 30 years and raised three children who attended SUSD.

Scottsdale voters who want greater accountability and a renewed focus on student success should support Amy Carney and Jeanie Beasley.
