Abe Hamadeh: Making AZ-08 a national punchline?

Sun City West resident: Photoshoot raises questions about congressman’s judgment, priorities

OPINION — As a resident of Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, I was embarrassed to see Congressman Abe Hamadeh recently become the subject of national ridicule.

National media outlets mocked a series of highly staged photographs from Hamadeh’s congressional office that looked more like a fashion shoot than the workplace of a member of Congress.

Rather than drawing attention to his work on behalf of Arizona, Hamadeh generated headlines that raised serious concerns about his judgment and priorities.

Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident. Over the past year, his official social-media presence has repeatedly produced distractions ranging from peculiar photo opportunities and questionable intern content to posts that appear designed to attract attention rather than inform constituents.

At the same time, comments are frequently blocked or restricted on his official congressional Facebook page, preventing constituents from publicly responding to much of the content he publishes.

Residents of AZ-08  deserve to be known for our communities, businesses, military veterans, retirees, workers and families — not for becoming the latest source of internet mockery.

Whether one agrees with Congressman Hamadeh’s politics or not, surely we can agree that the goal of a congressional office should be effective public service, not social media stunts.

Arizona faces serious challenges. Residents of AZ-08 deserve a representative focused on solving problems and exercising the sound judgment required of a member of Congress.

As voters evaluate who deserves to represent AZ-08 in the future, they should ask themselves a simple question: Is this the judgment, seriousness and leadership they expect from a member of Congress?
